North Korea Fires Ballistic Missiles Amid Rising Tensions with South Korea

By Elizabeth Ugbo

North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday from the Pyongyang and Wonsan areas toward the East Sea, according to South Korea’s military, in a move that signals continued hostility toward Seoul despite recent peace efforts.

Fresh Missile Launches Raise Regional Concerns

North Korea carried out two rounds of missile launches within 24 hours. First, the South Korean military detected an unidentified projectile on Tuesday.

Then, on Wednesday morning, multiple short-range ballistic missiles were launched from Wonsan. They traveled about 240 kilometres.

Later in the afternoon, another missile flew over 700 kilometres.

Meanwhile, the Japan Coast Guard confirmed a suspected ballistic missile launch. It also warned ships to remain alert.

Pyongyang Reaffirms Hardline Stance

A senior North Korean official strongly dismissed South Korea’s interpretation of recent remarks as friendly.

Jang Kum Chol described Seoul as “the enemy state most hostile” to Pyongyang. He criticized South Korean media reports as “nonsense.”

Furthermore, he called such interpretations “hope-filled dream reading” by “fools.”

Experts believe the missile launches reinforce North Korea’s firm anti-South position.

Analysts See Rejection of Peace Overtures

According to Lim Eul-chul, a North Korea expert, the launches send a clear message.

They show Pyongyang is rejecting Seoul’s repeated attempts at dialogue.

In fact, these tests mark North Korea’s fourth and fifth known ballistic missile launches this year.

Tensions Rise Despite Diplomatic Gestures

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has tried to improve relations since taking office.

Earlier this week, Seoul expressed regret over drone incursions into the North.

Lee described the operation as “irresponsible” and admitted official involvement.

Kim Yo Jong later called the apology “wise behaviour,” signaling brief diplomatic openness.

However, the missile launches quickly overshadowed that moment.

Trump Comments Add to Diplomatic Complexity

Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently highlighted his relationship with Kim Jong Un.

He claimed strong ties and praised past interactions.

However, he also criticized South Korea’s support during the Middle East conflict.

Trump stated that U.S. troops protect South Korea, though actual numbers are about 28,500.

Notably, his suggestion of another meeting with Kim has received no response.

South Korea Responds with Emergency Meeting

Following the launches, South Korea’s National Security Office held an emergency meeting.

Officials urged North Korea to stop further provocations immediately.

They also emphasized the need for regional stability.

Conclusion

North Korea’s latest missile launches highlight ongoing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Although diplomatic signals briefly appeared, the tests show Pyongyang remains firm.

As a result, prospects for improved relations with South Korea remain uncertain.
