Peter Obi Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition under ADC in Uyo

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 Nigerian presidential election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Obi made the announcement on Saturday during the OBIDIENT Conference in Uyo, which also served as the official unveiling of ADC as his new political platform. He cited concerns over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) stance on the Labour Party (LP) as the reason for leaving his former party, asserting his commitment to pursuing the presidency.

Obi Leaves Labour Party Amid INEC Dispute

Obi explained that he left the Labour Party after being informed that INEC would not recognise its leadership while he remained a member. He also alleged there were efforts to prevent him from appearing on the 2027 ballot, a factor that influenced his decision to join ADC.

Commitment to Contest Despite Challenges

Declaring his resolve, Obi emphasised that he would contest the election regardless of obstacles. “I will contest the coming election even if it is conducted anywhere. And if they refuse to transmit election results, we will ensure the results are transmitted,” he stated, receiving loud applause from supporters.

Criticism of Current Economic Policies

Obi criticised the current administration’s borrowing practices, claiming that recent loans exceed those of all previous administrations combined. He warned that repayment schedules extending to 2045 and 2050 could unfairly burden future generations. He urged a focus on prudent fiscal management, transparency, and strategic investments rather than accumulating unsustainable debt.

Vision for Education, Healthcare, and Human Capital

Outlining his plans, Obi said his administration would prioritise education and healthcare, calling them essential pillars of national development. “We must invest in our people. Education and health are not optional; they are essential. That is how nations rise,” he said.

Anti-Corruption Stance

On governance, Obi reiterated his commitment to integrity. He cited his tenure as Anambra State Governor, where neither he nor his family enriched themselves from public office. He invited the public to petition him if any wrongdoing is found, underscoring his dedication to transparency.

OBIDIENT Movement Calls for Grassroots Mobilisation

Dr. Tanko Yunusa, coordinator of the OBIDIENT Movement Worldwide, urged supporters to strengthen structures within ADC and boost grassroots mobilisation. Dr. Ben Smith, Akwa Ibom State coordinator, described the 2027 election as a generational mission, focusing on youth employment, security, dignity for workers, and hope for Nigerians.

The Uyo declaration marks a major political realignment, as Obi positions himself for another presidential run under a new platform, setting the stage for an intense buildup to the 2027 elections.
