President Tinubu Hosts Governors for Interfaith Fast, Urges Inclusive Development

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Abuja, Nigeria – February 24, 2026: President Bola Tinubu hosted governors from across Nigeria at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday to break an interfaith fast. The event marked the simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent, highlighting unity, compassion, and national development. Governors, religious leaders, and community representatives attended to discuss social inclusion, security, and economic progress.

Unity Amid Religion and Ethnicity

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, representing the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Chairman, praised President Tinubu for fostering national unity during tense religious and ethnic times.

Uzodimma emphasized that the simultaneous fasting of Ramadan and Lent is divinely inspired. He said:

“It is rare for Muslim Ramadan to coincide with the Christian Lent. The last time was 33 years ago. This special moment reminds us not to allow religious or ethnic differences to guide politics.”

The governor commended the President’s leadership and commitment to bridging divides.

Security: Foundation of Prosperity

President Tinubu highlighted security as essential for economic growth. He said:

“Security is the foundation of prosperity. Without it, farms cannot flourish, businesses cannot grow, and families cannot sleep in peace.”

He reaffirmed plans to establish state police to empower states to combat insecurity effectively.

“This is not about politics but practicality. We must protect citizens and strengthen national frameworks,” he added.

Compassionate Leadership and Inclusive Development

The President urged governors to implement policies prioritizing the poor and underprivileged. He stressed the importance of inclusive development:

  • Reaching young people who feel forgotten.
  • Supporting women carrying families on their shoulders.
  • Uplifting grassroots communities where hope is fragile.

“Development must not recognize religion, compassion must not recognize tribe, and opportunity must not recognize status,” Tinubu said.

He assured Nigerians that his promises, including state policing and economic empowerment, will be delivered without delay.

Recognizing Governors’ Contributions

Tinubu acknowledged governors for their ongoing efforts to uplift communities:

  • Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum – praised for extending Ramadan outreach to Muslims and Christians.
  • Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf – welcomed despite political differences.
  • Ebonyi State Governor – reminded to temper justice with mercy.

The President emphasized tolerance and collaboration to strengthen faith, unity, and social structures.

Shared Humanity During Fasting Seasons

The interfaith fast coinciding with Ramadan and Lent symbolizes discipline, faith, sacrifice, and resilience. Tinubu highlighted:

“Leaders must reflect on the plight of citizens during periods of abstinence. These moments guide policies that improve livelihoods.”

He encouraged governors to go further in empowering youth, reducing poverty, and embracing all citizens.

Conclusion

President Tinubu concluded the gathering by thanking participants and God for the opportunity to serve Nigeria together. He reiterated his commitment to:

  • Inclusive development.
  • Security reforms.
  • Compassionate leadership.
  • Grassroots empowerment.

“As long as we work together, the best is yet to come for Nigeria,” he said.
