PRP, ADC Forge Alliance Ahead of 2027 Elections Amid Political Tensions

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Opposition parties in Nigeria have intensified talks ahead of the 2027 elections, as leaders of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) met in Abuja on April 10, 2026. They discussed political collaboration, condemned alleged anti-democratic actions by some forces, and addressed disputes involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The meeting signals growing efforts by opposition parties to unite against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) before the next general elections.

PRP Backs ADC Over INEC Dispute

The PRP strongly condemned what it described as assaults and anti-democratic actions targeting the ADC. The party warned that such actions threaten democracy and national stability.

In response, ADC National Chairman, David Mark, praised the PRP for its support. He noted that the PRP remains the only party publicly backing the ADC during the crisis.

Furthermore, Mark expressed optimism about sustained cooperation. He stressed the need to prioritize national interest over political rivalry.

Meanwhile, PRP National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, reaffirmed solidarity with the ADC. He specifically addressed the party’s ongoing dispute with INEC and other institutions.

Key Party Officials Attend Strategic Meeting

Several top officials attended the Abuja meeting. These included Bolaji Abdullahi, Muhammed Ishaq, and Salihu Lukman.

The gathering reflects ongoing political realignment among opposition parties. It also highlights efforts to resolve internal disputes, especially within the ADC and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

NNPP Vows Strong Comeback in 2027

Despite the exit of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) remains confident.

National Secretary, Dipo Olayoku, said the party will present a formidable presidential candidate.

He added that the NNPP continues to attract credible candidates. He also emphasized the party’s commitment to offering Nigerians hope through its manifesto.

SDP Intensifies Strategy, Gains Northern Support

Meanwhile, the SDP has increased consultations and internal screening processes. The party aims to produce a strong presidential candidate.

National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, described the SDP as a growing national force.

He revealed that the party has engaged stakeholders, including Team New Nigeria. In addition, the SDP claims support from northern groups such as the Arewa Consultative Forum and the Northern Elders Forum.

According to Aiyenigba, rising insecurity and economic hardship could influence voter decisions. He argued that the APC risks rejection due to perceived poor performance.

Opposition Pushes for United Front Against APC

Opposition parties continue to explore alliances ahead of 2027. Their goal is to present a united front against President Bola Tinubu and the APC.

Although internal crises persist, parties like the SDP, NNPP, PRP, and ADC remain optimistic. They believe strategic collaboration will improve their chances in the elections.
