Ramadan 2026 in Nigeria has officially begun today, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, after the Sultanate Council confirmed the sighting of the new moon across the country. The announcement came from the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, who also serves as President of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA). The council verified and authenticated reports submitted from different states before declaring the first day of Ramadan 1447AH. Muslims nationwide have therefore commenced the obligatory fast.
Sultanate Council Confirms Crescent Sighting
The Sultanate Council received credible moon sighting reports from various parts of Nigeria.
According to a statement issued by Sambo Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, officials carefully examined each report. The council then authenticated the findings before making a final decision.
As a result, the Sultan formally declared the commencement of Ramadan 1447AH.
He made the announcement through the Shehu of Borno, Shehu Abubakar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi, who represented him.
Consequently, Muslims across Nigeria have begun fasting in obedience to Islamic teachings.

Ramadan remains one of the five pillars of Islam. During this period, Muslims observe daily fasting from dawn to sunset.
