Residents of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, panicked early Monday after suspected Boko Haram fighters launched an attack around Ajilari Cross, Dala and Bulamari areas at about 12:35 a.m., prompting a swift response from security forces.
Gunshots and Explosions Heard Across Communities
Residents reported sporadic gunfire and explosions during the attack. The sounds spread fear across several neighbourhoods.
Security forces quickly responded to the incident. Military and police reinforcements moved into the affected areas shortly after the gunfire started.
Meanwhile, military helicopters began flying over Maiduguri and nearby communities. The aircraft conducted aerial surveillance as security personnel engaged the attackers.
Residents Flee Homes as Situation Unfolds
Many residents rushed outside their homes as the shooting intensified.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said helicopters were flying over the city during the attack.
“Helicopters are currently flying around,” the resident said.
Another resident, Abdulamalik Aminu, who lives near Pompommari Bypass, described the tense situation.
“From my area, we heard it loudly. Everyone is outside now. Some people are trying to leave their homes,” he said.
He added that suspected Boko Haram fighters exchanged gunfire with security personnel before the situation began to calm.
“Boko Haram members are exchanging gunfire with security personnel, but for now, the situation has calmed down,” Aminu said.
Police Confirm Incident
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the suspected terrorist attack.
The police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, said officers had moved to the scene.
“Yes, there is a suspected terrorist attack at Ajilari Cross. I am currently on my way to the scene. I will give you details later,” Daso said.
Security Operations Ongoing
Security forces have continued operations in the affected areas to restore calm. Military helicopters still hover over parts of Maiduguri.
Authorities have yet to confirm casualties or the extent of damage from the attack.
However, residents remain alert as security agencies work to secure the city.
