Three persons were killed on Sunday night in a violent cult clash at Igbogene, a suburb of Yenagoa in Bayelsa State, after rival groups engaged in a gun battle that sent residents fleeing and forced businesses to shut down.
The attack occurred late Sunday, February 23, 2026, in the Igbogene area of Yenagoa. Eyewitnesses said suspected cult groups carried out the assault. The violence left three people dead and caused widespread panic. Security agencies have launched an investigation to track the fleeing suspects.
Panic as Gunshots Rock Community
Residents reported hearing gunshots in different parts of the community during the clash. As a result, many families fled their homes for safety.
Business activities stopped abruptly as fear gripped the area. Streets remained deserted for hours after the attack.
An eyewitness described the incident as a continuation of cult-related violence troubling parts of the state. However, authorities have yet to confirm the identities of the victims.
Rising Concerns Over Cult Violence in Bayelsa
This latest incident adds to recent cult clashes in other parts of the state. In separate incidents, six people reportedly lost their lives.
Consequently, residents have expressed growing concern over safety. Many now urge the state government to strengthen surveillance and security presence in affected communities.
A resident, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisal, called for intensified security patrols to restore calm in the area.
Police Confirm Incident, Launch Investigation
The spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Musa Muhammed, confirmed the attack.
“Yes, three lives were lost. Investigation has commenced and efforts are on to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects,” he said.
Police authorities assured residents that they would bring those responsible to justice. Meanwhile, security operatives have increased patrols in the area to prevent further violence.
