President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday began his state visit to the United Kingdom at Windsor Castle, where King Charles III hosted him and First Lady Remi Tinubu, marking a key diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Britain.

Royal Welcome and Ceremonial Honours

King Charles III received President Tinubu with full state honours at Windsor Castle. The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery fired a 42-gun salute to mark the occasion.

Earlier, Prince William and Princess Catherine welcomed the Nigerian leader and his wife at the Fairmont Hotel. They later travelled together to Windsor Castle.

Remi Tinubu’s Religious and Diplomatic Engagements

First Lady Remi Tinubu, who is also a pastor, will preach at services at Lambeth Palace. In addition, she will meet representatives of the Church of England.

She will also engage with organisations focused on interfaith dialogue, strengthening religious and cultural ties.

Strengthening UK–Nigeria Relations

Nigeria and the United Kingdom continue to deepen their diplomatic partnership. In November 2024, both countries signed a strategic agreement to boost economic, immigration, and security cooperation.

Moreover, the two nations signed an economic cooperation deal earlier in 2024 under Britain’s previous Conservative government.

Many Nigerian banks operate subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, reinforcing strong financial ties.

Cultural Exchange and Royal Collection Display

During the visit, officials showcased items related to Nigeria from the Royal Collection. There was also an exchange of gifts between both nations.

Afterwards, a state banquet will take place. President Tinubu and King Charles III are expected to deliver speeches. Several global leaders and celebrities will attend.

Honouring Queen Elizabeth II

President Tinubu and his wife will lay a wreath at the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II. The ceremony will hold at St George’s Chapel.

This act symbolises respect and historical ties between Nigeria and the British monarchy.

Key Diplomatic Meetings Ahead

On Thursday, President Tinubu will meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He will also engage with members of the Nigerian diaspora.

Recently, King Charles III hosted a reception for Nigerians in the diaspora at St James’s Palace.

Strategic Importance of the Visit

This state visit offers both nations an opportunity to discuss security, trade, and governance. It also comes ahead of Nigeria’s next presidential election.

Furthermore, the visit reinforces long-standing diplomatic and economic relations between both countries.
