Tinubu Says Nigeria’s Economy Recovering as States Stop Borrowing for Salaries

By Elizabeth Ugbo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday in Abuja said Nigeria has overcome major economic challenges and state governors no longer borrow from banks to pay workers’ salaries. He made the statement while hosting religious and traditional leaders at an interfaith Iftar (breaking of fast) at the Presidential Villa. Tinubu explained how economic reforms have improved government finances and assured Nigerians that security forces are defeating terrorist groups.

Tinubu: Nigeria’s Economy Has Turned the Corner

President Tinubu said his administration inherited a very difficult economic situation. However, he noted that reforms have begun to deliver results.

“I can report that the economy has turned the corner,” Tinubu said.

He added that pensioners are gradually receiving relief and that economic indicators show steady improvement.

According to him, the government has prevented Nigeria from sliding into bankruptcy.

“We have saved Nigeria from bankruptcy,” the President stated.

Governors No Longer Borrow to Pay Salaries

Tinubu highlighted one key sign of economic recovery.

He said state governors no longer rush to banks to borrow money for workers’ salaries.

“No governor in this country is running around the banks to borrow money to pay workers’ salaries,” he said.

He explained that improved government revenue and fiscal reforms have helped stabilise state finances.

Government Prioritises Agriculture and Education

Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to agriculture and education.

He said the government will continue to invest heavily in both sectors.

According to him, strong agricultural production will strengthen food security.

Meanwhile, improved education will secure a better future for young Nigerians.

President Assures Nigerians on Security

The President also addressed security concerns across the country.

He said terrorists remain desperate because security forces continue to defeat them.

“They leave trails of blood in their wake,” Tinubu said.

However, he insisted that Nigeria will defeat terrorism.

“Nigeria will never surrender. We are going to win and win well,” he assured.

Religious Leaders Praise Interfaith Gathering

The interfaith breaking of fast brought together traditional rulers and religious leaders from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

The Etsu Nupe, Yahaya Abubakar, represented the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and its President-General, Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar.

He praised the President for bringing leaders of different faiths together.

According to him, the gathering symbolises unity and religious harmony in Nigeria.

Christian Leaders Pledge Support

Christian leaders also expressed support for the government.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) was represented by its President, Daniel Okoh.

Stephen Baba-Panya, President of the Evangelical Church Winning All, also attended.

They assured the President that the Christian community will support efforts to strengthen the economy and improve security.

Tinubu Expresses Gratitude to Nigerians

President Tinubu thanked Nigerians for the opportunity to serve the country.

“I am grateful to be given the opportunity to serve,” he said.

He promised to remain faithful in discharging his duties as President.

He also urged Nigerians to remain hopeful as the government works toward a safer and more prosperous nation.
