Tinubu’s Absence in Lagos Sparks Rift Speculation Amid Project Commissioning

By Elizabeth Ugbo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was absent on Wednesday in Lagos during the commissioning of major projects, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio represented him, fuelling speculation about a possible rift with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu despite official denials.

Akpabio Commissions Key Lagos Projects

Akpabio inaugurated the Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge and the newly renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administrative Complex in Alausa.

The projects formed part of Tinubu’s scheduled working visit to Lagos. However, his absence drew public attention.

Several governors attended the event to support Sanwo-Olu. These included Dapo Abiodun, Douye Diri, Babagana Zulum, and Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the APC Governors’ Forum.

Akpabio stated that he acted on behalf of the President. He also praised the projects for improving infrastructure and service delivery.

More Projects Delivered by Sanwo-Olu Administration

The Lagos State Government highlighted other completed projects. These include the Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge, Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle, Maracana Stadium, and the Lagos Food Logistics Hub in Abijo.

Earlier, authorities announced partial road closures across affected areas. Consequently, officials advised motorists to use alternative routes.

Lagos Government Denies Rift Claims

The Lagos State Government dismissed reports of a rift between Tinubu and Sanwo-Olu.

Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, described the claims as speculation. He insisted the relationship remains strong.

According to him, Tinubu still supports the governor. He added that the President would not visit Lagos if he felt dissatisfied.

Furthermore, Omotoso noted that succession discussions ahead of 2027 have not started.

Debate Grows Over Tinubu’s Absence

Despite the denial, Tinubu’s absence continues to spark debate. Lagos remains his political base, so observers expected his presence.

In addition, the government defended the reported N279 billion cost of the bridge. Officials argued that the project’s scale justifies the spending.

As political activities gradually build toward the next election cycle, analysts continue to monitor developments closely.
