Troops Foil Kidnapping Attempt Along Enugu–Otukpo Road, Rescue Three Victims

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Troops of Sector 1 under Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Whirl Stroke rescued three victims, including a minor, on February 25, 2026, along the Enugu–Otukpo Road after credible intelligence revealed that suspected kidnappers had seized an 18-seater Benue Links bus carrying four passengers. Acting swiftly, the military mobilized to intercept the criminals and prevent what could have escalated into a major security breach.

Force Commander Praises Troops’ Vigilance

The Force Commander commended the troops for their resilience, vigilance, and operational efficiency. He stated that their prompt action prevented a serious security incident.

He also advised motorists to remain alert while traveling. Road users should notice unusual absence of traffic over two-kilometre stretches, pause to assess, and report suspicious activities to the nearest security post.

Rapid Response Ensures Safe Rescue

The Forward Operation Base, Otukpo, received intelligence during a night patrol indicating the bus with registration TYK 221 YK had been seized. Troops immediately trailed the kidnappers along their withdrawal route. This swift action forced the criminals to abandon three victims, all of whom were rescued unharmed. A mobile phone believed to belong to the kidnappers was recovered. No direct contact occurred during the pursuit.

Building on Recent Success

The rescue follows a similar operation less than a week ago when JTF South-East saved five travelers along the 9th Mile axis in Enugu. Troops engaged armed attackers, forced them to release captives, and recovered intelligence that aided future operations.

Safety Tips for Road Users

Authorities urge motorists to:

  • Stay alert at all times
  • Observe unusual traffic patterns along two-kilometre stretches
  • Pause and assess suspicious situations
  • Report concerns immediately to security posts
