Troops of the Nigerian Army rescued 19 kidnapped victims and killed a suspected terrorist during a coordinated security operation in the Federal Capital Territory. The mission happened around Gidan Dogo in Bwari Area Council of Abuja on Saturday. Troops from the 7 Guards Battalion carried out the operation after receiving credible intelligence about kidnappers hiding in the area.
Intelligence Leads Troops to Terrorist Hideout
The operation followed intelligence reports about terrorists linked to recent abductions in the Byazhin area of Bwari.
According to a statement from the Guards Brigade, troops launched the raid near Gidan Dogo. They worked with operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and local vigilantes.
During the operation, troops encountered the criminals and engaged them in a firefight.
Security forces neutralised one suspect, while others escaped with suspected gunshot wounds.
Weapons Recovered, Victims Rescued
Troops recovered one AK-47 rifle and a locally fabricated firearm from the scene.
Security personnel also rescued all 19 kidnapped victims during the operation.
Authorities immediately evacuated the victims to safety. Officials say the victims are currently receiving medical attention and support.
After the rescue, troops returned to their Forward Operating Base in Bwari. They have continued patrols to prevent further criminal activities.
Army Commends Troops for Bravery
Commander of the Guards Brigade, Adebisi Onasanya, praised the troops and other security operatives.
He commended their bravery, professionalism, and commitment to protecting residents of the capital.
“The Guards Brigade will intensify operations with other security agencies to eliminate terrorism and kidnapping,” the statement said.
The statement came from Lieutenant Olawuyi Itunuoluwa, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at the Guards Brigade Headquarters.
Previous Military Successes Against Bandits
Kidnapping remains a major security challenge across Nigeria. However, security forces continue to record operational successes.
For example, in August 2025, the Nigerian Army killed seven armed bandits in Baba, Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Troops carried out the two-hour operation after receiving intelligence about bandits attacking farming communities.
The soldiers neutralised seven criminals and recovered four motorcycles used for their operations.
Air Force Rescues 76 Kidnap Victims
In another operation, the Nigerian Air Force rescued 76 kidnapped victims during an air strike targeting the notorious bandit leader Babaro.
The air operation took place at Pauwa Hill in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.
According to the state government, the strike targeted Babaro’s stronghold, which had terrorised nearby communities for years.
Authorities confirmed that many rescued victims included women and children.
Rising Kidnapping Threat in Nigeria
Kidnapping and banditry continue to threaten many communities across the country.
Armed groups frequently target villagers, travellers, and commuters for ransom.
However, security agencies say intelligence-driven operations and coordinated raids remain key strategies against criminal gangs.
Authorities also pledged stronger collaboration among security forces to improve safety nationwide.
