Trump Threatens ICE Deployment to Airports Amid Shutdown Crisis

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Donald Trump has threatened to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to US airports, on Saturday, during a partial government shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security, in the United States, to pressure Democrats into approving funding and to intensify immigration enforcement.

Trump Escalates Immigration Rhetoric

Trump renewed his criticism of Somali immigrants. He claimed they had “destroyed” Minnesota.

Minnesota hosts the largest Somali American population in the US. It is also home to Ilhan Omar, a vocal Trump critic.

Earlier, Trump described Somalis using harsh and controversial language. His remarks have drawn widespread backlash.

Deadly Immigration Operation Sparks Debate

Tensions increased after a recent operation killed two US citizens. The victims were identified as Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

The incident involved agents from ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

As a result, Democrats are demanding reforms. They want stricter rules for agent identification and judicial warrants.

Democrats vs Republicans on Homeland Security

Democrats insist on changes to immigration enforcement practices. They also want to prevent racial profiling.

However, Republicans have rejected these demands. They argue the proposals weaken national security.

Additionally, Republicans oppose splitting funding for airport security from immigration agencies.

Shutdown Disrupts TSA Operations

The shutdown has severely affected the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Nearly 50,000 employees have worked without pay.

Consequently, many officers have resigned or called in sick. As of March 17, 366 officers had quit.

Absenteeism has also surged. At Houston Hobby International Airport, the rate reached 55 percent on March 14.

Therefore, passengers now face long lines and delays at several airports.

Trump Proposes ICE Takeover at Airports

Trump blamed Democrats for the crisis. He warned he would deploy ICE agents to airports.

He claimed the agents would deliver unmatched security. Furthermore, he ordered them to prepare immediately.

He also stated that ICE would arrest undocumented immigrants, especially those from Somalia.

Experts Raise Security Concerns

Industry analysts have raised concerns about the plan. They warn that replacing TSA officers may reduce efficiency.

ICE agents lack the same training as TSA personnel. As a result, airport safety could suffer.

Critics also fear militarised operations in civilian spaces. Airports serve families, children and elderly travellers.

Political Stalemate Deepens

The funding crisis continues without resolution. Congress missed a February 14 deadline to fund Homeland Security.

Meanwhile, Trump has threatened to reject any bill that does not meet his demands.

This ongoing standoff continues to disrupt airport operations and national security planning.
