Vice President Shettima Arrives in Ethiopia to Represent Nigeria at AU Summit

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – February 13, 2026: Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima arrived in Addis Ababa to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 39th AU Heads of State and Government session.

He was warmly received by Ethiopian and Nigerian officials at Bole International Airport.


Ethiopian and Nigerian Leaders Welcome Vice President

Senator Shettima was greeted by Ethiopian Minister of Innovation and Technology, Dr. Belete Mola, and State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Berhanu Tsegaye.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yussuf Tuggar, also welcomed the Vice President.

Immediately, Amb. Tuggar briefed him on the Summit itinerary.


AU Summit 2026 Focuses on Water and Sanitation

The AU Summit theme is “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”

Discussions will focus on sustainable water management, improved sanitation, and overall development.

This theme aligns with the African Union’s long-term Agenda 2063 framework.


High-Level Engagements for Nigeria

Vice President Shettima will participate in side events and bilateral meetings with political and business leaders.

These engagements aim to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic, and strategic partnerships across Africa.

Furthermore, Nigeria will showcase its leadership and initiatives during these sessions.


Nigeria’s Key Gains and Democratic Initiatives

Amb. Tuggar highlighted the launch of the Regional Partnership for Democracy (RPD) to promote democratic governance across Africa.

Nigeria was confirmed as host of the African Monetary Institute and the African Central Bank.

Additionally, Nigeria secured a seat on the board of the African Central Bank.
