Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday received Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf into the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, declaring that the state must not remain on the political sidelines as President Bola Tinubu eyes consolidation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kano’s Strategic Importance to APC
Shettima described Kano as pivotal to national electoral success. He stressed that the state plays a decisive role in presidential calculations.
According to him, Kano cannot remain on the periphery of national politics. Therefore, its full alignment with the ruling party remains critical.
“Kano is so important that we cannot afford for it to be on the sidelines,” he said.
Massive Defection Strengthens APC Structure
The high-profile event also witnessed the defection of 22 state Assembly members, eight federal lawmakers, and 44 local government chairmen.
Notably, the APC lost Kano State in the 2023 presidential and governorship elections to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). However, the latest development signals renewed momentum for the ruling party.
Efforts to persuade NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso to return to the APC had failed in the past. Nevertheless, Yusuf eventually dumped the NNPP on January 26, 2026, alongside key political office holders.
Yusuf: Development Over Political Struggles
Governor Yusuf said he defected to prioritise development in Kano State. He noted that residents want tangible progress, not prolonged political battles.
“Our people are not interested in endless political struggles,” he said. “They want roads, hospitals, schools, and improved socio-economic conditions.”
He also thanked Vice President Shettima and party leaders for their support.
APC Leadership Reaffirms 60/40 Power-Sharing Formula
APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda praised Yusuf for joining the party. He described the move as timely and strategic.
Earlier, during a courtesy visit to the governor, Yilwatda reaffirmed the party’s 60/40 leadership-sharing formula. The arrangement balances positions between existing members and new entrants.
“The 60/40 formula promotes fairness and inclusivity,” he said. “It ensures everyone has a sense of belonging.”
A statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa, highlighted the large turnout of party supporters. The chairman said the gathering reflected unity and enthusiasm within the Kano APC fold.
Party Leaders Rally Behind Kano Alignment
Several top party figures attended the event. They included former APC National Chairman Umar Ganduje, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
Yilwatda also commended Alhaji Yusuf Gawuna and Senator Jibrin for prioritising party unity. In addition, he praised Ganduje for strengthening the party’s structure in Kano.
Renewed Hope Agenda and 2027 Outlook
Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to align Kano with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He pledged to work closely with stakeholders to maintain unity and prosperity in the state.
Meanwhile, party leaders expressed confidence that Kano’s return to the APC will boost support for President Tinubu ahead of the next general elections.
With the large-scale defections and renewed alliances, the APC aims to reposition Kano as a stronghold in the 2027 electoral cycle.
