The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has appointed Dr. Yakubu Uba Mohammad as the Interim State Chairman in Kano State. The appointment, announced on March 6, 2026, aims to reorganise the party and strengthen its grassroots presence ahead of future elections. The party’s national leadership confirmed the decision through an official letter signed by National Secretary Vidiyeno H. Bamaiyi.
Appointment Takes Immediate Effect
According to the letter obtained by News Point Nigeria, Dr. Mohammad’s appointment takes immediate effect.
However, the role begins with a six-month probationary period. During this period, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) will assess his performance.
After the review, the committee will decide whether he should continue as chairman or if further leadership changes are necessary.
YPP Tasks Chairman With Rebuilding Party Structures
The party leadership charged Dr. Mohammad with revitalising the YPP in Kano.
Specifically, he must strengthen internal party structures and expand membership across the state. He must also work closely with the North-West Zonal Chairman and the National Working Committee.
In addition, the party directed him to organise a statewide summit.
The summit will bring together old and new party members. It aims to promote unity and rebuild the party’s organisational framework.
Membership Mobilisation Drive Planned
Furthermore, the new interim chairman must begin a mass membership mobilisation campaign across Kano.
The leadership believes this effort will expand the party’s influence and support base in the state.
Dr. Mohammad must also facilitate the establishment of a permanent state secretariat for the party. This step will strengthen the institutional presence of the YPP in Kano.
Appointment Guided by Party Constitution
The letter explained that the appointment follows the provisions of the 2017 YPP Constitution, amended in 2022.
Party leaders also advised Dr. Mohammad to study both the constitution and the party manifesto.
According to the leadership, these documents will guide his decisions and leadership style while in office.
Kano Remains Key Political Battleground
Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most politically important states due to its large voting population.
Therefore, many political parties continue to strengthen their grassroots structures in the state.
The YPP leadership expressed confidence in Dr. Mohammad’s ability to promote the party’s ideals of “Unity, Service and Accountability.”
Consequently, the party hopes his leadership will reposition the YPP ahead of future electoral contests.
