FEDERAL GOVERNMENT URGED TO BOOST CANCER HEALTH FUND ALLOCATION

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Federal Government has been urged to increase budgetary allocation to the Cancer Health Fund to improve access to affordable and life-saving treatment for cancer patients across Nigeria. The call was made by cancer advocates and health stakeholders during activities marking Cancer Awareness Week, commemorated globally to draw attention to the rising burden of cancer and the need for stronger healthcare interventions.

Speaking during the awareness activities, stakeholders stressed that inadequate funding continues to limit early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, forcing many patients to abandon care due to high costs. They called on the government to prioritize early screening, subsidize treatment, and strengthen healthcare infrastructure, noting that improved funding would help save lives and reduce the long-term economic impact of the disease on families and the nation.

A cancer survivor who shared his experience highlighted the emotional and financial toll of battling the illness, emphasizing that timely support and affordable healthcare significantly improve survival rates. He also encouraged Nigerians to embrace regular medical screening and seek prompt medical attention when symptoms arise.

Stakeholders concluded that sustained public awareness, alongside increased government funding and policy support, remains critical to reducing cancer-related deaths and improving patient outcomes nationwide.
