The Federal Government of Nigeria has raised alarm over the growing recruitment of Nigerians into foreign armed conflicts. The warning was issued on Friday in Abuja by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa. The government said investigations revealed that some Nigerian citizens are being illegally recruited to fight in overseas combat zones. According to officials, the recruitment is carried out under false pretences and deceptive promises. Authorities explained that the move to speak out became necessary due to the increasing number of reported cases.
In a statement, the Ministry disclosed that unsuspecting Nigerians are being lured with offers of lucrative jobs, private security roles, scholarships, and migration opportunities. However, upon arrival in foreign countries, many are allegedly deployed to active conflict areas.
The government described the development as disturbing and warned citizens to remain vigilant. It stressed that individuals should thoroughly verify overseas job offers and travel arrangements before making commitments.
Furthermore, the Ministry advised Nigerians to seek proper clearance and confirm the legitimacy of recruitment agencies through relevant authorities. It reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens abroad and preventing exploitation linked to foreign armed conflicts.
