Ministry Holds Stakeholder Meeting to Strengthen Nigeria Food Security

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Ministry of Agriculture, led by Minister Abdullahi, recently held a high-level engagement meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, bringing together media, civil society groups, farmers, agro-businesses, and government institutions to promote transparency, collaboration, and effective policy implementation for improving food security.

“This platform highlights the importance of stakeholder engagement in shaping effective policies,” he said.

Strengthening Collaboration for Food Availability

Abdullahi emphasized that the initiative aims to ensure food remains available, accessible, and affordable across the country.

Representatives from media, civil society organizations, farmers’ groups, agro-allied businesses, donor agencies, and government institutions attended the meeting.

“The goal is clear: Nigeria must produce what it consumes and consume what it produces,” he said.

Agricultural Reforms Transforming Production

The ministry is implementing reforms to modernize Nigeria’s agricultural landscape and expand production of priority crops.

Abdullahi urged stakeholders to collaborate closely with state agriculture ministries to accelerate productivity nationwide.

“Together, we can transform Nigeria’s food system and ensure sustainable growth for all citizens,” he added.

Strategic Investments in Key Value Chains

Strategic investment in agricultural value chains is positioning Nigeria as a major player in the global market.

“We have prioritized rice, maize, and wheat value chains, creating opportunities for millions of smallholder farmers and other stakeholders,” Abdullahi said.

Aligning Policies with the Renewed Hope Agenda

The ministry is aligning policies with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to achieve food sovereignty.

Ongoing interventions have already reduced prices of essential food commodities by about 50% nationwide.

“These efforts reflect our commitment to improving food security and citizens’ well-being while addressing high input costs to sustain affordable food supply,” Abdullahi added.
