South Africa Ready to Host CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Amid Morocco Uncertainty

By Elizabeth Ugbo

South Africa has declared it is ready to host the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after Morocco announced it cannot hold the tournament in March due to logistical and scheduling conflicts. CAF confirmed the event, originally set for March 17 to April 3, will now take place from July 25 to August 16, and emphasized that preparations are continuing with FIFA and stakeholders.

Morocco Faces Logistical Challenges

Moroccan authorities informed CAF that March hosting is impossible because of men’s championship games and other international events. The sixth edition of “Morocco, capital of African football” will involve eight teams in Casablanca and Rabat. These commitments clash with the original WAFCON schedule.

South Africa Offers Advanced Infrastructure

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, stated the country has the stadiums and facilities needed to host. He warned against delays that could harm women’s football development.

“We will never be held hostage by countries with less infrastructure. South Africa is ready to host,” McKenzie said.

CAF Explores Alternative Hosts

CAF quietly surveyed alternative countries in case Morocco withdrew. Algeria declined the offer, leaving South Africa as the strongest candidate. Discussions reportedly reached a stalemate between CAF President Patrice Motsepe and Moroccan football chief Fouzi Lekjaa before the postponement was announced.

Tournament Remains Crucial for World Cup Qualification

The 2026 WAFCON will serve as Africa’s qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Four semi-finalists secure automatic qualification, while a fifth African team may qualify via intercontinental playoff. Motsepe confirmed the calendar will not be changed to accommodate qualifiers, increasing pressure on Morocco.

CAF Confident About a Successful Tournament

CAF expressed confidence that the tournament will be successful despite the uncertainties over the host nation.

“Preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 are underway, and all parties are confident it will be a success,” CAF said.
