Iran may withdraw from the 2026 World Cup after rising tensions with the United States and Israel. The country’s Sports Minister, Ahmad Donyamali, said Iran cannot safely participate in the tournament. The competition will take place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran is welcome but warned about safety concerns.
Iran Signals Possible Withdrawal from World Cup
Iran’s Sports Minister announced that the national team may not travel to the tournament. He cited security fears following recent military clashes.
According to Donyamali, the country cannot guarantee the safety of its players. Therefore, the government believes the conditions for participation do not exist.
He told Iran’s national broadcaster that the situation makes travel risky for the team.
“Given that this corrupt government has assassinated our leader, we cannot participate,” he said.
Rising Regional Conflict Raises Security Concerns
Tensions escalated after the United States and Israel reportedly launched strikes on Iran. The attacks allegedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran launched missiles and drones toward several Gulf states hosting U.S. bases. These countries include:
- Bahrain
- Kuwait
- Qatar
- United Arab Emirates
As a result, security concerns have intensified across the region.
Trump Says Iran “Welcome” But Participation May Be Unsafe
Despite the tension, Trump said Iran could still compete in the World Cup. However, he questioned whether it was safe for them.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump said the team remains welcome at the tournament.
Still, he added that their participation may not be appropriate because of safety risks.
Earlier this week, Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, said Trump had previously confirmed Iran’s eligibility to compete.
Iran’s Group Matches Already Scheduled
Iran already has three group-stage matches scheduled in the United States.
The fixtures include:
- Iran vs New Zealand national football team – June 15 in Los Angeles
- Iran vs Belgium national football team – June 21 in Los Angeles
- Iran vs Egypt national football team – June 26 in Seattle
However, Iran’s final decision on participation remains unclear.
FIFA Could Choose Replacement Team
If Iran officially withdraws, FIFA will decide which team replaces them.
The organization’s regulations allow it to select a replacement country when a qualified team withdraws. Nevertheless, officials have not indicated which team could take Iran’s spot.
