Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has opened up about the emotional journey he has faced since losing his father, Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, in a tragic accident in Umunede, Delta State, on January 27, 2026. Speaking to journalists, Ndidi explained how he has navigated grief with the support of his family, friends, fans, teammates, and the Nigerian football community, while returning to Turkey to play for his club, Beşiktaş.

Family, Friends, and Fans Provide Overwhelming Support

Ndidi revealed that encouragement from loved ones and the football community has been a major source of comfort.

“With the help of my family, friends, loved ones, and everyone around me, including my teammates and the club, they have really been there for my family and me. I’m very grateful,” he said.

Messages from Nigerian fans, the Nigeria Football Federation, the Delta State Government, and Beşiktaş also strengthened him during this difficult time.

Football Becomes a Tool for Healing

Returning to the pitch has helped Ndidi stay focused and honor his father’s memory.

“Football helps me stay focused, but I take it one day at a time. I pray for strength and continue to honour my father in everything I do,” he added.

During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Ndidi scored his first-ever goal for Nigeria, a powerful header against Tunisia in the group stage. He celebrated by referencing his father and paying tribute to legendary former captain Nwankwo Kanu.

Quick Comeback Despite Loss

Just four days after his father’s funeral, Ndidi returned to play for Beşiktaş, contributing 23 minutes in a 2–1 victory over Konyaspor. He later scored in Beşiktaş’ 4–0 win against Göztepe on February 22, showing resilience despite personal grief.

Strength, Resilience, and Professionalism

Ndidi admitted that coping with the loss has been extremely challenging.

“It’s been very tough these past few weeks. It still feels unreal, to be honest,” he said.

Fans and colleagues praised his professionalism, resilience, and focus, highlighting the importance of family, support networks, and passion in overcoming personal loss.
