The Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, has urged Muslims across Nigeria to observe the new moon of Shawwal on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, to mark the end of Ramadan and determine the date for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
Muslims Asked to Report Moon Sighting Promptly
The Sultan called on all Muslims to watch for the crescent after sunset. He stressed the importance of timely and accurate reporting.
According to the statement, anyone who sights the moon should report immediately through traditional channels. First, they should inform their nearest District or Village Head. Then, the information will reach the Sultan for confirmation.
Dedicated Channels Open for Verified Reports
The council also provided dedicated telephone lines for direct reporting. However, it emphasized that all reports must be credible and verified before acceptance.
This process ensures accuracy and unity in announcing Eid-el-Fitr across Nigeria.
Shawwal Moon Signals End of Ramadan
The sighting of the Shawwal crescent officially marks the end of Ramadan. It also signals the beginning of Eid-el-Fitr celebrations nationwide.
As the spiritual leader of Muslims in Nigeria, the Sultan will make the final announcement. This declaration will follow verified reports from different parts of the country.
Official Statement from Sultanate Council
The directive came in a statement issued by the Sultanate Council of Sokoto. It was signed by Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs.
The statement confirmed that March 18, 2026, corresponds to the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH. Therefore, it has been set aside for the moon sighting.
Nationwide Importance of the Announcement
This annual exercise plays a key role in Islamic practice. It ensures that Muslims across Nigeria begin Eid celebrations on the same day.
Therefore, the Sultan urged cooperation and vigilance among the faithful.
