The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has inaugurated a 16-member Trade War Committee in Nigeria to address trade malpractices at ports. The initiative was announced in Lagos by its founder, Boniface Aniebonam. The committee aims to improve cargo documentation, streamline clearance processes, and combat corruption affecting port operations. It will also gather intelligence, monitor activities, and support reforms within the maritime sector.
Why the Trade War Committee Was Established
Dr. Aniebonam explained that persistent exploitation and inefficiencies prompted the move. He stressed that traders and freight forwarders face serious operational challenges daily.
Moreover, he noted that corrupt practices disrupt cargo documentation and weaken the clearance value chain. As a result, businesses lose time and money.
Key Responsibilities of the Committee
The committee will focus on several critical areas:
- Strategic trade advocacy across Nigerian ports
- Monitoring port operations and reporting irregularities
- Gathering policy intelligence for government use
- Engaging institutions to improve accountability
In addition, the committee will provide verified reports backed by evidence. This ensures transparency and supports decision-making at the highest level.
Concerns Over Weak Institutional Accountability
Dr. Aniebonam raised concerns about some presidential appointees in the maritime sector. He alleged that corruption and regulatory capture hinder reform efforts.
Furthermore, he stated that weak accountability systems allow exploitative practices to persist. Therefore, stronger oversight remains essential.
How the Committee Will Support Government Reforms
The committee will act as an independent advisory body. It will supply credible field intelligence directly to authorities.
Consequently, policymakers will receive accurate and unfiltered insights. These insights will guide regulatory reforms and strategic appointments.
Impact on Nigeria’s Trade and Port System
This initiative aims to restore efficiency in Nigeria’s port operations. It will also improve trust among traders and logistics operators.
Ultimately, the committee seeks to strengthen the country’s international trade ecosystem and align with anti-corruption goals.
