Outrage erupted in Ozoro, Isoko North LGA of Delta State, after viral videos showed youths allegedly harassing and assaulting women during a cultural festival on Thursday. The incident involved unidentified young men who reportedly molested women in public spaces. Authorities, community leaders, and advocacy groups have since condemned the act, while security agencies have begun investigations to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.
Community Leaders Condemn “Barbaric” Act
The President-General of the Isoko Development Union (IDU), Prof. Chris Akpotu, described the incident as an aberration. He stressed that such behavior contradicts Isoko cultural values.
According to him, harassment of women will never be tolerated. He added that offenders must face both traditional sanctions and legal consequences.
Similarly, Isoko North LGA Chairman, Prince Godwin Ogorugba, strongly condemned the act. He described it as inhumane and unacceptable. He also vowed to track down and prosecute those responsible.
Council Chairman Vows Arrest and Prosecution
Ogorugba stated that some individuals hid under the guise of a festival to commit the crimes. However, he assured residents that justice would be served.
He said the youths involved failed to uphold societal values. He further emphasized that no cultural event justifies abuse or misconduct.
Additionally, he urged calm and restraint. He encouraged residents to allow law enforcement agencies to handle the matter.
ActionAid Calls for Justice and Victim Support
ActionAid Nigeria condemned the incident and called for urgent action. The organization described the development as a serious failure to protect women in public spaces.
The group demanded immediate identification and prosecution of perpetrators. It also urged transparency in the process to restore public trust.
Furthermore, ActionAid called on Delta State authorities to provide support for victims. This includes medical care, legal aid, and psychosocial services.
Experts Warn of Deeper Systemic Issues
ActionAid Country Director, Dr. Andrew Mamedu, said the incident reflects deeper societal problems. He explained that weak enforcement and harmful norms often enable gender-based violence.
He warned that normalizing such acts creates a culture of impunity. As a result, women and girls remain at risk.
Cleric and Stakeholders Demand Cultural Reforms
Deacon Chris Iyovwaye also condemned the incident. He stated clearly that rape and molestation are crimes, not culture.
He urged stronger supervision during festivals. He also called for youth reorientation toward discipline and respect.
Moreover, he encouraged traditional rulers and parents to take responsibility. According to him, cultural events must celebrate heritage, not promote abuse.
