A yet-to-be-identified driver narrowly escaped death on Saturday evening after a Mack truck caught fire at Alausa Secretariat, inward Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Lagos State. The incident occurred while the truck was in motion, prompting an immediate response from emergency agencies. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service quickly arrived, contained the blaze, and restored traffic flow.
How the Fire Started
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck suddenly ignited while moving along the busy expressway. However, the driver managed to stop the vehicle safely and exit before the flames intensified.
Fortunately, he sustained only minor injuries and avoided a potentially fatal outcome.
Rapid Emergency Response Prevents Disaster
Emergency responders acted quickly to control the situation. LASTMA officials and firefighters worked together to extinguish the fire before it spread.
As a result, they prevented a major disaster along the highly congested route. Their swift intervention also ensured that traffic resumed without prolonged disruption.
LASTMA Reaffirms Safety Commitment
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the agency’s commitment to road safety.
He stated that LASTMA remains dedicated to maintaining a safe and efficient traffic system across Lagos State.
Moreover, he urged motorists to conduct regular mechanical and electrical checks on their vehicles. According to him, proper maintenance significantly reduces the risk of such incidents.
