El-Rufai Released by ICPC After Mother’s Death, Court Case Continues

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai regained freedom on March 28, 2026, in Kaduna after detention by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. Authorities held him since February 19 over alleged corruption. His release followed his mother’s death in Cairo. He still faces trial as court proceedings continue.

Background to Arrest and Charges

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission detained El-Rufai after a prior investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Investigators questioned him for 48 hours before transferring him to ICPC custody.

Subsequently, the commission arraigned him on a 10-count charge. These charges focus on alleged conversion of public property and money laundering. However, El-Rufai has denied all allegations.

Court Proceedings and Bail Hearing

At his arraignment before a Federal High Court in Kaduna, lawyers argued over his bail request.

The court then adjourned the bail ruling to March 31, 2026. Meanwhile, El-Rufai continues to prepare his defence as the legal process unfolds.

Release Following Personal Loss

El-Rufai’s release came hours after the death of his mother in Cairo, Egypt.

This development drew sympathy from political leaders and supporters nationwide.

Notably, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Uba Sani, and Nuhu Ribadu sent condolence messages to him and his family.

Life in Detention: Fasting, Study, and Writing

According to associate Bashir Garba Sufyan, El-Rufai maintained a disciplined routine while in custody.

He reportedly spent much of his time fasting and studying religious texts. In addition, he completed the recitation of the Holy Qur’an.

Sufyan also revealed that he read 10 books and wrote several pieces during detention.

Furthermore, his son, Bashir El-Rufai, confirmed his release and thanked supporters for their solidarity.

What Happens Next

Although El-Rufai has regained freedom, his legal challenges remain unresolved.

The court will resume hearing his case after the scheduled bail decision. Therefore, the outcome of the trial will determine his legal future.
