President Bola Tinubu has pledged to donate all his salaries since May 2023 to a new Armed Forces welfare fund, announced on Sunday in Abuja during his 74th birthday message, to support injured soldiers, fallen heroes’ families, and military welfare nationwide.
Tinubu Announces Major Support for Armed Forces
President Tinubu revealed the initiative as part of activities marking his 74th birthday. He directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to open a special account for the fund.
He said the fund will support wounded personnel, widows, widowers, and children of fallen soldiers. Moreover, he stressed that the initiative will complement existing welfare and insurance schemes.
Personal Commitment to Military Welfare
Tinubu confirmed that all his salaries since assuming office will serve as seed funding. He described the move as a personal commitment to those who risk their lives for the country.
According to him, the fund will provide direct assistance to soldiers who lost limbs in service. It will also help families of those who died protecting Nigeria.
Call for National Support
The president urged governors, lawmakers, and the private sector to contribute to the initiative. He emphasized that supporting military personnel is a collective responsibility.
He stated clearly that caring for soldiers and their families is not charity. Instead, it is a national duty that must be fulfilled.
Low-Key Birthday Amid Economic Reforms
Tinubu chose a quiet birthday celebration due to the current national mood. He pointed to ongoing economic reforms as a reason for the subdued approach.
However, he still used the occasion to honour the Armed Forces. He described them as valiant men and women who ensure national peace and security.
Armed Forces Remembrance Activities Begin
Earlier, on December 2, 2025, Tinubu launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem at the State House, Abuja. This event marked the start of activities leading to the January 15 commemoration.
He donated ₦200 million toward the ₦320 million raised during the appeal. In addition, he unveiled the “Thank a Soldier” digital platform.
The government also announced plans to deploy retired military personnel to secure ungoverned areas.
Focus on National Security and Welfare
Tinubu reiterated that Nigeria must never forget the sacrifices of its soldiers. He added that their families deserve continuous support and recognition.
Furthermore, he assured Nigerians that details of the fund account will be released soon.
