A deadly attack occurred on Friday afternoon in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State, where heavily armed bandits ambushed a joint patrol team, killing at least 20 security personnel and vigilantes. The victims died while defending rural communities such as Garga, Kyaram, and Gyambau. The attackers struck around 2 p.m. on the way to Wanka. The assault highlights rising insecurity across border communities linking Plateau, Taraba, and Bauchi states.
KADA Condemns Killings
The Kanam Development Association (KADA) described the killings as deeply painful and unacceptable. The group stated that the victims died protecting communities facing repeated attacks.
According to KADA, the ambushed team included 12 security personnel and eight vigilante members. Two senior military officers were among those killed.
How the Attack Happened
The patrol team travelled in two vehicles during routine operations. However, hundreds of armed bandits suddenly attacked them near Wanka.
Witnesses said the attackers opened fire without warning. As a result, chaos spread quickly, forcing residents to flee in different directions.
Kyaram Community Looted
After the ambush, the bandits moved into Kyaram community. They looted properties worth millions of naira and rustled many cattle.
Residents said the attackers operated freely for hours. Consequently, many families lost valuables and livelihoods.
Rising Insecurity in Border Communities
KADA warned that the attack reflects a wider security crisis. Communities around Garga, Kyaram, and Gyambau have faced persistent violence for years.
These areas, located along Plateau, Taraba, and Bauchi borders, continue to experience kidnappings and cattle rustling. Therefore, residents now live in constant fear.
Youth Protest Sparks Tension
Following the attack, angry youths blocked major roads in protest. This action raised concerns about escalating tensions in the area.
Meanwhile, authorities have yet to respond officially. The Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, and the Police Public Relations Officer did not answer calls.
Fresh Shooting in Jos North
In a related development, gunmen carried out another attack in Jos North Local Government Area. The incident occurred around Anguwan Rukuba junction on Sunday evening.
A resident reported that attackers on motorcycles shot several youths. The situation created panic and heightened fear among residents.
Growing Security Concerns
The latest incidents highlight worsening insecurity in Plateau State. Communities continue to demand stronger protection and rapid response from security agencies.
Without urgent intervention, experts warn that attacks may increase across vulnerable rural areas.
