Samson Adamu Appointed CAF Acting General Secretary After Mosengo-Omba Exit

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Nigeria’s Samson Adamu, the Confederation of African Football (Confederation of African Football) Director of Competitions, was appointed Acting General Secretary on Sunday in Cairo. CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced the decision after an executive meeting, following the exit of Véron Mosengo-Omba due to retirement rules and internal transition needs.

The appointment followed the departure of 66-year-old Mosengo-Omba, who exceeded CAF’s mandatory retirement age of 63. The leadership change also aimed to stabilise CAF’s administrative structure. The Nigerian Football Federation (Nigeria Football Federation) immediately welcomed the development.

CAF Leadership Transition After Retirement Rule

CAF enforced its retirement policy, which required leadership change at the secretariat level. Consequently, Mosengo-Omba stepped down after serving since March 2021.

Although some staff earlier raised concerns about workplace culture, an internal review cleared him of wrongdoing. Still, CAF moved forward with restructuring.

Samson Adamu’s Appointment Background

Adamu served as CAF Director of Competitions since 2018. During this period, he oversaw major continental tournaments. These included Africa Cup of Nations preparations and CAF club competitions.

In addition, he played a key role in tournament planning and execution across Africa. His experience positioned him as a strong candidate for the interim role.

NFF Reaction to CAF Appointment

The Nigeria Football Federation quickly celebrated the appointment. It described Adamu’s elevation as a proud moment for Nigerian football administration.

The NFF message on X stated that Adamu’s appointment reflects his long-standing contribution to African football development.

CAF Executive Decision in Cairo

CAF President Motsepe confirmed the decision in Cairo after discussions with executive members. The meeting focused on continuity and administrative efficiency.

As a result, CAF appointed Adamu as caretaker general secretary. This ensures smooth operations during the transition period.

Key Developments Moving Forward

Adamu will now oversee CAF’s administrative and competition structures. He will also guide preparations for upcoming continental tournaments.

Meanwhile, CAF is expected to evaluate long-term leadership arrangements in the coming months.
