FIFA Unveils Match Officials for 2026 World Cup

By Elizabeth Ugbo

FIFA has announced the match officials for the 2026 World Cup, revealing who will officiate, what roles they will play, when the tournament will occur from June 11 to July 19, where it will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, why they were selected based on performance and experience, and how they were monitored over the past three years.

Rigorous Selection and Monitoring Process

FIFA selected the officials from a wider pool identified and monitored over three years. They attended seminars and officiated at major FIFA tournaments.

In addition, assessors regularly evaluated their performances in both domestic and international matches. As a result, only top-performing officials made the final list.

Increased Number of Officials for Historic Tournament

The 2026 World Cup will be the largest in history. It will feature 48 teams and 104 matches.

Consequently, FIFA increased the number of officials. The list includes 52 referees, which is 41 more officials than the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Furthermore, FIFA appointed 88 assistant referees and 30 video match officials. These officials come from all six confederations and represent 50 member associations.

Continued Growth of Women Referees

FIFA continues to promote gender inclusion in officiating. Six women referees will officiate matches in 2026.

This development builds on the progress made during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Notably, women referees handled matches successfully in that tournament.

Pierluigi Collina emphasized this progress. He stated that FIFA aims to further develop women’s refereeing worldwide.

FIFA Confirms Quality of Selected Officials

FIFA’s chief refereeing officer, Pierluigi Collina, expressed confidence in the selections. He stated that the chosen officials are the best in the world.

Moreover, FIFA ensured that every official met high performance standards before selection.
