Security operatives on Tuesday fortified the Rainbow Event Centre in Abuja as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) hosted its national convention, where about 3,000 delegates gathered to elect members of the National Working Committee (NWC) that will lead the party for the next four years.
Heavy Security Presence at Venue
Security agencies increased their presence around the venue early in the day. Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) controlled access points.
Officials screened all delegates thoroughly before entry. In addition, security patrol vehicles occupied strategic positions around the event centre.
Journalists also passed through strict checks before gaining access. As a result, the environment remained orderly and controlled.
Convention Holds Amid Leadership Crisis
The convention took place despite an ongoing leadership crisis within the party. Two factions continue to claim control of the ADC structure.
Earlier, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) suspended recognition of all factions. This decision followed a Court of Appeal ruling and ongoing legal disputes.
Melaye Insists on Proceeding
Former lawmaker, Dino Melaye, confirmed that the convention would proceed despite obstacles.
He said several attempts aimed to disrupt the event. According to him, authorities denied access to multiple venues.
“Even late last night, there were efforts to cancel this venue,” he stated. “However, we stood firm and continued with our plans.”
Organisers Express Confidence
Meanwhile, Kabiru Saje, a member of the party’s New Media Committee, expressed optimism about the event.
He noted that the party faced challenges securing a venue. However, organisers adapted quickly and finalized arrangements.
“The convention will either produce new leadership or reaffirm the current structure,” he explained.
Furthermore, he added that preparations were complete and delegates arrived steadily. He also described the atmosphere as positive and well-organised.
Delegates Gather for Key Decisions
Delegates began arriving before the scheduled start time of 11 a.m. Consequently, the venue filled steadily with party members from across the country.
The convention remains critical for shaping the ADC’s future direction. Party leaders aim to stabilise the structure and strengthen internal unity.
