The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Monday approved a major restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit in Nigeria. The reform targets improved discipline, transparency, and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force. The move introduces real-time oversight mechanisms across commands nationwide. It also strengthens internal accountability systems. Authorities announced the decision through the Force Public Relations Office.
Strengthening Oversight and Accountability
The IGP stated that the restructuring will improve internal monitoring. The upgraded unit will now track police activities in real time. As a result, it will quickly identify misconduct and enforce discipline.
Moreover, the new structure aligns monitoring with investigative functions. This change will eliminate inefficiencies and improve operational coordination.
According to the Force spokesperson, Anthony Okon Placid, the reform addresses existing gaps. It also enhances proactive inspections and intelligence-led oversight.
Appointment of New Monitoring Unit Head
As part of the reform, the IGP appointed Aliyu Abubakar as head of the Police Monitoring Team. He will lead the restructured unit and oversee nationwide operations.
Previously, Abubakar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department. He worked in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State commands.
In addition, he handled several high-profile investigations. He also collaborated with state authorities to modernise investigative processes.
Focus on Professionalism and Service Delivery
Colleagues describe Abubakar as disciplined and community-oriented. He consistently promotes transparency and public engagement.
Therefore, the Force expects his leadership to strengthen accountability. It also aims to improve service delivery across all police formations.
Furthermore, the restructuring supports broader institutional reforms. The Police leadership wants a more citizen-focused system.
Reform Agenda and Strategic Impact
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to reform. The new framework will enhance operational efficiency nationwide.
At the same time, the Monitoring Unit will serve as a central accountability mechanism. It will ensure officers follow established standards.
Ultimately, the reform seeks to build public trust. It also aims to reposition the Force as a professional institution.
