President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr Fatima Suleiman Zuntu as the new Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA). The appointment, announced in Abuja on Monday, took effect from April 16. It aligns with Section 5 of the NBMA Act, 2015, and will run for four years. The President expects her to strengthen the agency’s regulatory mandate and advance national development.
Background of the Appointment
The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation confirmed the appointment in an official statement. The statement, signed by Chris Ugwuegbulam, highlighted Dr Zuntu’s expertise in public health and policy strategy.
Moreover, the government noted her strong record in implementing impactful national programmes. This experience positions her to lead the agency effectively.
Tinubu’s Directive to the New NBMA Boss
President Tinubu urged Dr Zuntu to apply her knowledge to improve the agency’s performance. He emphasized the importance of her role in national development.
“Dr Fatima Suleiman Zuntu is a public health professional and policy strategist with a proven track record,” the statement said. It added that her expertise will benefit the nation.
Role of the National Biosafety Management Agency
The National Biosafety Management Agency regulates the safe use of modern biotechnology in Nigeria. It also ensures the protection of human health and the environment.
In addition, the agency enforces biosafety laws and monitors biotechnology practices across the country. Therefore, strong leadership remains critical to its mission.
Tenure and Expectations
Dr Zuntu’s appointment will last an initial four-year term. During this period, she will oversee policies that promote biosafety and innovation.
Furthermore, stakeholders expect her to strengthen regulatory frameworks and improve public confidence in biotechnology.
