Wolverhampton Wanderers were relegated from the Premier League on Sunday after West Ham drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, confirming their fate with two games left, as results elsewhere left them unable to close the gap to safety.
Stalemate Confirms Wolves’ Fate
West Ham failed to secure a crucial win against Crystal Palace. As a result, Wolves could no longer escape relegation.
Before the match, Wolves trailed 18th-placed Tottenham by two points. However, the gap remained unchanged after the weekend fixtures.
Although Spurs conceded a late equaliser against Brighton, Wolves could not capitalize. Their earlier 3-0 defeat to Leeds had already weakened their position.
Poor Results Seal Relegation
Wolves struggled throughout the 2025/26 season. Consistent poor performances left them stuck in the relegation zone.
Moreover, the team failed to respond under pressure. Even when rivals dropped points, Wolves could not take advantage.
Consequently, the club became the first team relegated this season.
End of an Era for Wolves
This relegation ends Wolves’ eight-year stay in the top flight. The club once thrived under Nuno Espirito Santo.
During that period, Wolves achieved:
- Promotion to the Premier League
- Back-to-back seventh-place finishes
- Europa League quarter-final appearance
- FA Cup semi-final run
However, those successes now feel distant.
Recruitment Errors and Leadership Issues
Wolves declined due to poor decisions at the top. Recruitment mistakes weakened the squad over time.
Additionally, instability in management worsened the situation. The club sacked Gary O’Neil and Vitor Pereira in quick succession.
Chairman Jeff Shi also departed in December. His exit followed a poor summer window and a terrible start to the season.
No Manager Bounce Under Edwards
Edwards took charge in November. However, he failed to inspire a turnaround.
Instead, Wolves focused on long-term planning. The club used the January transfer window to prepare for life in the Championship.
Therefore, relegation became inevitable.
Arokodare and Wolves Fall Short
Super Eagles striker Arokodare could not save Wolves from relegation. Despite efforts, the squad lacked consistency and quality.
In the end, their campaign collapsed under pressure.
What’s Next for Wolves?
Wolves must now rebuild in the Championship. The club needs better recruitment, stability, and clear direction.
If they act quickly, a return to the Premier League remains possible.
