Former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has explained why he rejected the vacant Netherlands manager’s job, choosing to remain in club football after talks with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB). The 47-year-old former Feyenoord coach made the decision after discussions about replacing Ronald Koeman, because he prefers daily work with players at club level rather than international management.
Arne Slot Ends Netherlands Coaching Talks
Slot held talks with the KNVB about becoming the Netherlands national team manager. However, he decided not to continue with the process.
The Liverpool boss also rejected reports about disagreements over salary or contract length.
According to BBC Sport, Slot clarified that the discussions never reached that stage.
“Over the past few weeks, various reports have appeared regarding the vacancy at the Dutch national team,” Slot said.
“Those reports suggested that I had withdrawn after lengthy negotiations over salary and contract duration.”
“That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks.”
Why Arne Slot Chose Club Football
Slot explained that his current career preference influenced his decision.
He wants to work with players every day and remain involved in regular training sessions.
“At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day,” he said.
“Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team.”
Therefore, Slot believes club football offers more opportunities for him at this stage.
“And this is why I chose not to continue the talks,” he added.
“I decided not to start negotiations on what a possible contract might look like.”
Slot Praises Netherlands and KNVB
Despite rejecting the role, Slot stressed that his decision was not due to negative feelings toward the Netherlands team.
He also praised the KNVB for its professional approach during the discussions.
“I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB,” Slot said.
“I can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week.”
“For now, I believe that club football still has a lot to offer me.”
Arne Slot Still Open to Netherlands Job
Slot has not ruled out managing the Netherlands in the future.
The former Feyenoord coach described the opportunity as a potential honour.
“It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day,” he said.
“However, this was not the right moment for me.”

Slot’s decision leaves the Netherlands searching for another candidate.
Reports in the Netherlands have linked former Portugal manager Roberto Martinez with the vacant position.
However, Slot’s comments suggest that negotiations never advanced far enough to involve salary or contract terms.
For now, the 47-year-old remains focused on his club career and daily work on the training pitch.
