Cross River State Government has confirmed a new COVID-19 case involving a 53-year-old Chinese national in Akamkpa Local Government Area. The case was identified after the patient developed symptoms following his arrival in Nigeria on March 17. Health authorities immediately activated surveillance systems, traced 10 contacts, and placed them under restriction to prevent further spread.
Swift Response to Contain the Virus
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, said the government acted quickly. According to him, the patient initially received treatment at a state facility before doctors transferred him to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for advanced care.
At the hospital, medical teams conducted tests following standard protocols. Results later confirmed COVID-19 infection. However, Ayuk stated that the patient is responding well to treatment.
Contacts Traced and Monitored
Meanwhile, the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Inyang Ekpenyong, confirmed that officials traced 10 individuals. These individuals had direct contact with the infected patient.
Health workers have restricted their movement and placed them under close monitoring. In addition, surveillance teams visited the patient’s workplace in Akamkpa to assess possible exposure.
Government Urges Calm Amid Containment Efforts
Despite the development, authorities insist there is no cause for panic. Ayuk reassured residents that the state has strong systems in place.
He explained that the government will detect and contain any outbreak quickly. Furthermore, he stressed that COVID-19 remains a global issue, not limited to Nigeria.
Public Health Measures Still Essential
Health officials have urged residents to remain cautious. They advised continued use of preventive measures such as hand hygiene and face masks.
Ekpenyong also noted that COVID-19 has not been eradicated. Therefore, silent infections may still occur.
Strengthened Health Systems in Cross River
Ayuk highlighted improvements in the state’s health sector. He stated that surveillance systems remain active and effective.
According to him, the government has strengthened its response capacity to manage outbreaks. As a result, officials remain confident in handling any public health threat.
