Chelsea FC have sacked head coach Liam Rosenior after less than four months in charge. The decision came on Tuesday following a 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. The loss marked Chelsea’s fifth straight league defeat without scoring. As a result, the club dropped to seventh place, seven points behind Liverpool FC. Assistant coach Calum McFarlane will now lead the team on an interim basis.
Chelsea Confirm Managerial Change
Chelsea confirmed the decision after a string of poor performances. Club officials stated that results fell below expectations.
Moreover, Rosenior managed just 11 wins in 23 matches across all competitions. He also won five of 13 Premier League games.
Although he guided Chelsea to the FA Cup semi-finals, all wins came against lower-league teams.
McFarlane Steps In as Interim Boss
Calum McFarlane will take charge until the end of the season. Notably, he previously led the team to a 1-1 draw with Manchester City. However, he also suffered a defeat against Fulham FC.
His first match as interim manager comes against Leeds United at Wembley. The FA Cup semi-final will determine a place in the final.
Chelsea Begin Search for New Manager
Chelsea have already started the process of appointing a permanent head coach. According to reports, several candidates are under consideration.
These include Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, and Edin Terzić.
Iraola recently announced his exit from AFC Bournemouth. Meanwhile, Silva’s contract with Fulham expires in July.
Rosenior Reacts to Chelsea’s Struggles
Rosenior described the team’s performance as “indefensible” and “unacceptable.” Fans also voiced frustration during the defeat on the south coast.
Despite his professionalism, the club decided to act quickly. Chelsea emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly.
Poor Form Seals Rosenior’s Fate
Chelsea’s recent form ultimately led to the sacking. The team failed to score in five consecutive league matches.
This run marks the club’s worst scoreless streak since 1912. Consequently, pressure mounted on Rosenior, forcing the club’s hand.
