Gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked an orphanage and school in Zariagi, near Kabba Junction in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State, on April 26, 2026, abducting 23 pupils and the proprietor’s wife during a late-night raid, while security operatives have since rescued 15 victims and continue efforts to free the rest.
Attack Throws Community Into Panic
The attackers stormed the facility, known as Dahallukitab Group of School, late Sunday night. They fired sporadically and created panic across nearby settlements.
Residents reported hearing gunshots around 10:30 p.m. Consequently, fear spread quickly through the community.
A local resident said the incident shocked many villagers. He explained that people woke up to news of the abduction.
Government Confirms Rescue Efforts
The Kogi State Government condemned the attack and described it as unfortunate.
Kingsley Fanwo, Commissioner for Information and Communications, confirmed that security operatives rescued 15 pupils. He added that efforts are ongoing to free the remaining victims.
Furthermore, he stated that security agencies responded swiftly, which helped limit casualties.
Security Agencies Intensify Operations
Security operatives, led by the Nigeria Police Force, launched immediate rescue operations. Other agencies supported the mission.
Fanwo praised the coordinated response of the security teams. He noted that their quick action prevented further damage.
Meanwhile, authorities continue to track the abductors and secure the victims’ release.
Concerns Over Unregistered Institutions
The state government raised concerns about unregistered schools and orphanages in remote areas.
Officials warned that such facilities face higher security risks. They stressed that lack of regulation exposes children to danger.
Therefore, the government urged operators to register their institutions. It also advised them to engage security agencies for proper assessment and protection.
Police Yet to Issue Official Statement
As of the time of filing this report, the Kogi State Police Command has not released an official statement.
Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, were unsuccessful. Calls and messages sent to her phone were not returned.
