NFF Intensifies Search for Golden Eaglets Coach Amid Youth Team Overhaul

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Nigeria Football Federation is searching for new coaches across national teams in Nigeria, as of April 2026, due to poor performances, especially the Golden Eaglets’ failure to qualify for two consecutive FIFA U-17 World Cups, prompting a restructuring process and review of applications.

Golden Eaglets Coaching Race Intensifies

The race to lead the Golden Eaglets has gained momentum. Several coaches have entered the contest, and the NFF continues to assess candidates.

Among the leading names are Shola Adegun, Olumide Ajibolade, Eboboritse Uwejamomere, and Sani Kaita.

Adegun and Ajibolade have strong reputations in youth development. They worked at top academies like Sporting Lagos Academy and Beyond Limits Football Academy. Meanwhile, Uwejamomere brings experience from his role with the Super Eagles.

NFF Yet to Confirm Appointments

Although speculation continues, the NFF has not made any official announcement. One applicant stated clearly that no confirmation has been received yet.

The NFF Technical Committee is still reviewing applications. Therefore, decisions on coaching roles remain pending.

Changes Across National Teams

The federation has already made moves in other teams. For instance, Akeem Busari now leads the Flamingos’ technical crew.

In addition, Moses Aduku has taken charge of the Falconets. These appointments reflect a broader restructuring strategy.

U-23 Coaching Role Attracts Big Names

Attention has also shifted to the U-23 team. Reports suggest that Samson Siasia and Daniel Amokachi are top contenders.

The team aims to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Nigeria previously won gold in Atlanta 1996 and bronze in Rio 2016. However, the team has missed recent editions.

Maikaba Denies Flying Eagles Appointment

Meanwhile, Abdu Maikaba has dismissed claims about his appointment as Flying Eagles coach.

He confirmed that he applied for the role. However, he stressed that the NFF has not contacted him officially. Therefore, reports suggesting his appointment remain premature.

Conclusion

The NFF continues its restructuring process across multiple teams. While several candidates compete for key roles, official announcements are expected soon. The federation aims to rebuild Nigeria’s youth football dominance.
