Mali’s military leader Assimi Goita met Russia’s ambassador in Bamako on Tuesday after coordinated rebel attacks killed Defence Minister Sadio Camara over the weekend. The assaults, carried out by Tuareg separatists and al-Qaeda-linked fighters, targeted key military sites across northern and central Mali. Russian-backed forces responded but withdrew from Kidal, while authorities now try to stabilise the country amid escalating violence.
Coordinated Rebel Offensive Shakes Mali
Over the weekend, armed groups launched widespread attacks across Mali. These strikes marked the largest offensive in nearly 15 years.
Notably, Tuareg rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) joined forces with the al-Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM). Together, they targeted the main army base and areas near Bamako’s airport.
As a result, the coordinated effort showed a new level of cooperation between groups with different goals. This alliance has intensified pressure on the military government.
Russian-Backed Forces Face Setbacks
Meanwhile, Russia confirmed that its Africa Corps supported Malian troops during the attacks. The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that its forces prevented a coup and protected key installations, including the presidential palace.
However, Russian mercenaries and Malian troops reportedly withdrew from Kidal after intense fighting. Social media footage also appeared to show soldiers surrendering to rebel fighters.
Despite these setbacks, Russia insisted its forces inflicted heavy losses on the attackers and helped maintain government control.
Death of Defence Minister Deepens Crisis
The attacks claimed the life of Defence Minister Sadio Camara, dealing a major blow to the government.
At the same time, Goita remained out of public view until Tuesday. His reappearance alongside the Russian ambassador aimed to reassure citizens of his leadership.
Observers believe the meeting signals continued reliance on Russian military support.
Kidal Falls as Rebels Advance
Rebel groups successfully pushed government and Russian forces out of Kidal, a strategic northern town.
Additionally, Russia warned that Tuareg separatists are regrouping for further attacks. This raises concerns about prolonged instability in the region.
The scale of the offensive highlights the rebels’ growing coordination and operational strength.
Government Seeks Stability Amid Uncertainty
In response, the Kremlin called for peace and stability in Mali. The country has faced more than a decade of insurgency and political unrest.
Since the 2021 coup brought Goita to power, Russia has increased its influence in Mali.
Now, the government must contain the advancing rebels while maintaining control in Bamako and beyond.
