President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Rilwan Lanre Babalola as Special Adviser on Power and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Power Sector Reset. The appointment was announced on Thursday in Abuja by the Presidency. It aims to fix Nigeria’s electricity sector through urgent reforms. The government also seeks measurable improvements in power supply nationwide.
Mandate of the Presidential Task Force
The newly created task force will operate under a direct presidential mandate. It will focus on restoring discipline, efficiency and commercial viability in the power sector.
Specifically, the task force will:
- Enhance revenue assurance and sector liquidity
- Restore grid discipline and market integrity
- Reduce technical, commercial and collection losses
- Strengthen tariff integrity and cost discipline
In addition, the team will deliver a 90-day implementation blueprint to fast-track reforms.
Focus on “Performance Before Expansion”
The Presidency introduced a “Performance Before Expansion” framework. This approach prioritises fixing existing systems before adding new capacity.
Moreover, the task force will:
- Promote productive use of electricity across key sectors
- Develop Electricity Growth Zones
- Improve coordination among ministries, departments and agencies
As a result, the government expects better service delivery and improved sector performance.
Tinubu Expresses Confidence in Babalola
President Tinubu said Babalola brings urgency and discipline to the role. He also noted his strong execution-driven approach.
Furthermore, the President described Babalola as a seasoned expert. He highlighted his deep understanding of Nigeria’s electricity value chain and its challenges.
Presidency Signals Power Sector Reset
According to the statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the appointment reflects a decisive plan to reset the power sector.
The Presidency stressed that the task force will serve as a high-level delivery platform. It will ensure accountability and fast implementation of reforms.
Energy Governance Restructuring
In a related move, the President redesignated the Office of the Special Adviser (Energy). It is now the Special Adviser (Oil & Gas).
This change aims to clarify roles and prevent overlap within Nigeria’s energy governance structure.
Expected Impact on Power Supply
The government targets measurable improvements in electricity supply. It also aims to boost overall sector performance.
Consequently, Nigerians may see gradual stability in power delivery if reforms succeed.
