President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Minister of Power. The nomination was announced on Thursday in Abuja. It was contained in a statement by presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga. The Senate will screen and confirm the nominee. The move aims to strengthen reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.
Background to the Nomination
The nomination follows the resignation of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu. He stepped down to pursue elective office.
Consequently, the Presidency moved quickly to fill the position. This decision reflects urgency in addressing power sector challenges.
Tegbe’s Experience in the Power Sector
Tegbe brings over 35 years of experience in public and private sectors. He has worked extensively on fiscal and economic reforms.
Notably, he contributed to regulatory improvements involving the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company. These roles strengthened his expertise in institutional reforms.
Professional Career and Achievements
Tegbe previously served as Senior Partner at KPMG Africa. He also led its Advisory Services division.
During this period, he drove initiatives in fiscal policy reform and governance. In addition, he advised both government agencies and private firms. His focus included regulatory frameworks and investment structuring.
Current Role and International Engagement
Currently, Tegbe serves as Director General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership. He also acts as Global Liaison for the initiative.
In this role, he strengthens cooperation between Nigeria and China. Furthermore, the partnership aligns with the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation objectives. It promotes economic and social development through bilateral engagement.
Presidency’s Expectations
The Presidency expressed confidence in Tegbe’s nomination. It expects him to improve grid stability and attract investment.
Moreover, the government believes his leadership will accelerate reforms. These reforms align with the Renewed Hope Agenda. Ultimately, they aim to deliver better electricity supply for Nigerians.
Next Steps
The Senate will screen Tegbe in line with constitutional provisions. If confirmed, he will assume office as Minister of Power.
His appointment could mark a new phase in Nigeria’s electricity sector reforms.
