Police Dismiss Four Officers Over Killing of Mene Ogidi in Effurun

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed four officers, including ASP Nuhu Usman, for fatally shooting Mene Ogidi on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State, after an internal probe found unlawful use of force and misconduct during a response to a parcel incident.

Police Confirm Dismissal and Prosecution Plans

The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, addressed journalists in Abuja on Sunday. He said the disciplinary process has concluded.

Moreover, the Police Service Commission approved the dismissal. The decision took immediate effect.

Placid added that authorities have forwarded the case file to the Office of the Attorney General. Prosecutors will review and proceed with charges.

Internal Probe Finds Misconduct

According to Placid, the Police Monitoring Unit conducted a detailed investigation. The findings confirmed professional misconduct and abuse of office.

In addition, the officers’ actions could breach public peace. Therefore, the Force acted swiftly.

“The Force does not shield officers who violate the law,” Placid said. He stressed that rank offers no protection from accountability.

Arrests Made, More Suspects Wanted

Investigators arrested Nuhu Usman and three team members. They remain in custody.

Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for other suspects. These include a commercial driver from Yenagoa and two vigilante members.

Tactical teams are already tracking them. Authorities aim to bring all involved persons to justice.

Incident Details: What Happened in Effurun

Reports show that Mene Ogidi received a parcel from a friend in Yenagoa. He later went to a motor park in Effurun.

He intended to waybill the parcel to Sapele. However, routine checks revealed a locally made Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

Bystanders quickly intervened. They conducted a citizen’s arrest and alerted police officers.

ASP Nuhu Usman and his team responded to the scene. They met Ogidi already restrained and unarmed.

However, the officer allegedly opened fire instead of following standard procedures. The shooting killed Ogidi on the spot.

Police Promise Transparency and Justice

Placid assured Nigerians of a transparent process. He emphasized respect for human rights.

He also stated that every suspect deserves due process under Nigerian law.

Furthermore, the police pledged full cooperation with prosecutors. They aim to ensure a diligent court process.

Authorities urged the public to remain calm. They also called for cooperation with ongoing investigations.
