Tottenham Hotspur missed a crucial chance to move closer to Premier League safety after a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. Mathys Tel scored for Spurs in the second half, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised from the penalty spot after a VAR review. The result leaves Spurs only two points above the relegation zone with two matches remaining, while Leeds United continued their impressive campaign under Daniel Farke.
Mathys Tel Gives Spurs Early Second-Half Advantage
Spurs started the match with urgency because they needed all three points. However, Leeds stayed compact and frustrated the home side during the first half.
Five minutes after the restart, Mathys Tel produced a stunning 20-yard strike to give Tottenham the lead. The goal lifted the home crowd and appeared to put Spurs in control.
Shortly afterwards, Richarlison wasted a golden chance to double the advantage when he fired over the crossbar from close range. That miss later proved costly.
VAR Drama Hands Leeds a Route Back
Leeds gradually grew into the contest as Tottenham became nervous under pressure. Daniel Farke’s men continued to press forward and looked dangerous on the counterattack.
With 16 minutes remaining, Tel’s evening changed dramatically. The forward attempted a reckless bicycle kick inside the penalty area and caught Ethan Ampadu in the head.
After a VAR review, the referee awarded Leeds a penalty. Dominic Calvert-Lewin calmly converted the spot-kick to level the score at 1-1.
Leeds Show Premier League Quality Under Daniel Farke
Leeds delivered another disciplined performance despite already securing Premier League survival. Farke demanded intensity from his players, and they responded brilliantly.
The visitors nearly snatched victory deep into stoppage time. Sean Longstaff unleashed a powerful effort, but Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky produced a superb save to tip the ball onto the crossbar.
Leeds fans applauded Farke and his squad after the final whistle following another hard-earned result.
Tottenham’s Relegation Concerns Continue
Tottenham failed to secure a third consecutive league victory after recent wins against Wolves and Aston Villa. Instead, the draw increased pressure on the club ahead of the final two matches.
Roberto de Zerbi’s side struggled to break Leeds down despite 13 minutes of added time. Spurs now sit just two points above 18th-placed West Ham, keeping the relegation battle wide open.
Meanwhile, Leeds can approach their remaining fixtures with confidence after an impressive return to the Premier League.
