The Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, called on African nations to strengthen collaboration on Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) during a high-level continental engagement in Abuja. The event, themed “Building African Digital Foundations Together,” brought together governments, development partners, and digital stakeholders to discuss how stronger digital systems can drive economic growth, innovation, and inclusive governance across Africa.
Dr. Kana Highlights Importance of Digital Public Infrastructure
Dr. Kana described the gathering as a strategic opportunity to shape Africa’s digital future. He explained that African countries must move beyond simple digitization and instead build resilient digital systems designed for long-term development.
According to him, Digital Public Infrastructure has become essential for national growth and global competitiveness. He noted that countries leading in innovation, financial inclusion, healthcare, education, and artificial intelligence rely on strong digital ecosystems.
He said secure digital identity systems, interoperable payment platforms, trusted data-sharing frameworks, and reliable digital platforms are now critical national assets.
Collaboration Key to Africa’s Digital Economy
Furthermore, Dr. Kana stressed the need for stronger partnerships among African nations. He said collaboration would help countries reduce costs, share digital tools, and accelerate innovation.
He welcomed efforts to develop a unified African Digital Public Infrastructure roadmap over the next three to five years. According to him, the framework would help countries identify common priorities and promote reusable digital solutions.
In addition, he encouraged African nations to move from discussions to practical implementation. He urged stakeholders to focus on pilot projects, shared platforms, and interoperable systems.
Galaxy Backbone Commended for Digital Transformation Efforts
Dr. Kana praised Galaxy Backbone Ltd, the National Identity Management Commission, and the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System for supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
He said Galaxy Backbone has consistently strengthened secure digital infrastructure and improved public sector service delivery through technology-driven initiatives.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Backbone Ltd, Ibrahim Adeyanju, said the engagement would deepen partnerships among African countries.
According to him, stronger cooperation would support resilient digital ecosystems capable of driving economic growth and improving service delivery.
Strong Digital Infrastructure Needed for Artificial Intelligence
Dr. Kana also linked Africa’s artificial intelligence ambitions to the strength of its digital infrastructure.
He stated that meaningful AI development cannot succeed without trusted data systems, digital identity frameworks, reliable connectivity, and interoperable platforms.
Additionally, he emphasized the need for governance frameworks that promote transparency, accountability, security, accessibility, and inclusion in digital systems.
