Political Accountability Debate Deepens in Plateau as Dewan Challenges Gagdi’s Project Claims

By Elizabeth Ugbo

A political controversy has emerged in Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State after Dewan Kudangbena Gabriel accused federal lawmaker Yusuf Adamu Gagdi of making misleading claims about constituency projects and empowerment programmes. Dewan made the allegations during a live interview with journalist Samson Omale, where he questioned the existence and completion of reported projects and called for independent verification by the media and residents.

Dewan Questions Road Construction Claims

According to Dewan, claims that nine roads were constructed across the constituency do not reflect conditions on the ground. He argued that some of the projects remain incomplete, while others cannot be verified by residents.

He maintained that people living within the affected communities have not seen evidence supporting the road development claims.

Concerns Over Borehole Distribution

Dewan also challenged assertions that boreholes had been installed across all polling units in the constituency.

He stated that several communities still struggle with access to clean water. Consequently, he rejected suggestions that water projects had reached every intended location.

According to him, authorities should provide clear records and verifiable evidence to support such claims.

Youth Empowerment Figures Disputed

The controversy expanded to youth empowerment programmes.

Dewan disputed reports that 159 youths secured employment through the intervention of the lawmaker. He challenged anyone with evidence or contact details of the alleged beneficiaries to present proof publicly.

He added that he would personally reward anyone who could verify the employment claims.

Call for Investigative Journalism and Transparency

Furthermore, Dewan urged journalists and media organisations to strengthen investigative reporting.

He stressed that public statements from political office holders should undergo thorough verification before publication.

According to him, accountability and fact-based journalism remain essential for strengthening public confidence and democratic governance.

Public Reactions Grow

The allegations have triggered reactions among political observers and residents across the constituency.

Many residents have called for greater transparency and independent verification of constituency projects and empowerment initiatives.

The development has also renewed discussions about political accountability and the responsibility of elected officials to provide measurable evidence of their achievements.
