Kwankwaso Names Aminu Gwarzo as Kano NDC Governorship Candidate for 2027

By Elizabeth Ugbo

National leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Friday announced Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the Nigeria Democratic Congress governorship candidate for Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections. Kwankwaso also unveiled Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna as the party’s candidate for Kano Central Senatorial District. He made the announcement through a statement posted on his official handle after consultations with party stakeholders.

Decision Based on Equity and Loyalty

Kwankwaso said the party selected both candidates based on equity, fairness, loyalty, and competence.

According to him, these values remain important to the progress and unity of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

“I am delighted to announce that His Excellency, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has been selected as our Kano NDC gubernatorial candidate for the upcoming elections,” the statement read.

“Similarly, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna will contest for the Kano Central Senatorial Seat.”

Kwankwaso also prayed for a peaceful and successful affirmation exercise. In addition, he expressed confidence in the party’s chances during the 2027 elections.

“As we proceed with today’s affirmation exercise, I pray for a seamless, peaceful, and successful process. May Almighty Allah grant us resounding victory in the forthcoming elections,” he stated.

Gwarzo’s Political Journey

Gwarzo remains one of Kwankwaso’s longtime political allies. He served as Deputy Governor of Kano State under Governor Abba Yusuf.

Before then, he worked as Commissioner for State Affairs during Kwankwaso’s administration. He also served as Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Area.

However, Gwarzo resigned as deputy governor after Yusuf defected to the All Progressives Congress.

Afterward, he joined the African Democratic Congress alongside Kwankwaso before later moving to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

Gawuna Returns to Kano Politics

Meanwhile, Gawuna previously served as Deputy Governor under Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

He later emerged as the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate during the 2023 Kano governorship election.

Political observers believe his senatorial ambition could strengthen the NDC’s influence in Kano Central ahead of the 2027 polls.
