Makinde Says Abducted Oyo Students, Teachers Still Held in Old Oyo National Park After 27 Days

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Governor Seyi Makinde has disclosed that students and teachers abducted by suspected bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026, are still being held within the vast Old Oyo National Park. He revealed this on Friday through his Newsletter No. 140, explaining that security agencies continue coordinated rescue operations despite the difficult terrain.

Makinde Gives Fresh Update on Rescue Mission

Makinde said intelligence reports confirmed that the abductees remain within the wider Old Oyo National Park axis.

According to him, security agencies have intensified operations across the area to secure the victims’ safe release.

He stressed that every credible intelligence report is receiving immediate attention.

“Every credible lead is being pursued and every lawful measure is being deployed to secure the safe release of the abductees,” the governor said.

Vast National Park Slows Rescue Operations

Makinde explained that the Old Oyo National Park covers about 2,500 square kilometres.

The park stretches across parts of ten local government areas in Oyo State.

He noted that the park’s dense vegetation and difficult terrain have complicated rescue efforts.

“The size and difficult terrain of the area pose significant operational challenges for security personnel, requiring patience, strategic coordination and sustained efforts,” he stated.

Victims Remain Government’s Top Priority

The governor acknowledged the pain and anxiety facing the families of the kidnapped students and teachers.

He said it has been 27 days since gunmen forcefully took the victims from their schools.

Although the rescue has taken longer than expected, Makinde assured residents that authorities remain fully committed to bringing everyone home safely.

He added that security agencies continue working around the clock.

Residents Asked to Support Security Agencies

Makinde urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.

He encouraged the public to report suspicious movements through the Oyo State Government’s toll-free Citizens Enquiry Number, 615.

He said timely information from residents could strengthen ongoing security operations.

Governor Warns Against Misinformation

The governor also cautioned residents against spreading unverified information about the abduction.

He warned that false reports could disrupt rescue efforts and undermine security operations.

“Misinformation can compromise ongoing rescue efforts and hinder security operations,” he said.

Makinde appealed to residents to continue praying for the abducted students and teachers while supporting security agencies with credible information.

Background of the Kidnapping

The abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, during coordinated attacks on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, all located in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The incident sparked widespread concern over insecurity and renewed calls for stronger security measures across the state.
