President Tinubu Celebrates Professor Femi Osofisan at 80, Praises Literary Legacy

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated renowned playwright and scholar Professor Femi Osofisan on his 80th birthday, celebrated on June 16. The President praised Osofisan’s outstanding contributions to literature, theatre, and education in Nigeria. He issued the tribute to honour the celebrated writer’s lifelong service to national development through creative works and scholarship.

Tinubu Applauds Osofisan’s Exceptional Career

President Tinubu described Professor Babafemi Adeyemi Osofisan as one of Nigeria’s most gifted intellectuals. He said the literary icon has enriched society through his creativity and commitment to social justice.

According to the President, Osofisan has excelled as a playwright, poet, novelist, teacher, scholar, emeritus professor, and newspaper columnist. Throughout his career, he has used his writings to address social challenges and inspire moral renewal.

Distinguished Academic and Literary Journey

Professor Osofisan was born in Erunwon, Ogun State. He attended Government College Ibadan before studying French at the University of Ibadan.

He later pursued graduate studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. After completing his education, he joined the University of Ibadan, where he served in several academic positions before retiring as a professor.

His acclaimed novella Maami inspired the 2011 Nigerian drama film directed by Tunde Kelani.

Global Recognition for Theatre Excellence

In 2016, the International Association of Theatre Critics honoured Professor Osofisan with the prestigious Thalia Prize. The award recognised his remarkable contributions to theatre arts and dramatic literature.

President Tinubu noted that Osofisan’s achievements reflect dedication, discipline, and selfless service. He also commended the professor’s unwavering advocacy for national rebirth through literature.

President Wishes Literary Icon Continued Good Health

As Professor Osofisan marks his 80th birthday, President Tinubu joined his family, friends, and the literary community in celebrating the milestone.

The President wished the renowned scholar good health and prayed that his wisdom would continue to inspire future generations. He described Osofisan as one of Nigeria’s finest minds and a lasting symbol of academic and literary excellence.
